Biography
On a chilly December day in Montreal, Quebec, on the day her father had tickets to meet the Rolling Stones back-stage at a concert, Alexa Kay literally stole the show and took her place on the world stage. With Billy Joel’s daughter, Alexa Ray, as her namesake, Alexa Kay seemed poised to take the music world by storm from day one.
After her family relocated to London, Ontario, Alexa got to work. By the tender age of 11, Alexa was already writing original music and subsequently recorded her first 8-song album, with the help of Joe and Anthony D'Avanzo at Backroom Recording. By 12, Alexa became a semi-finalist in the youth talent search at the Western Fair; and for two years in a row (2005 and 2006), she won her category at Kiwanis for the Broadway and Film category. At age 13, Alexa went to Orlando, Florida and entered the American Idol Experience contest, she was the runner up.
At age 14, Alexa picked up a guitar for the first time and fell in love at first strum. By 16, she had an album worth of original songs and cut her first official demo, featuring 5 originals, at Brooklyn Studios. By 17, Alexa already had a wealth of performing experience under her belt: she had the opportunity to perform at the Kingston Mines in Chicago, and at The Puglia in Little Italy, New York City. She opened for the Blushing Brides and Foreign to Earth, shared a gig and consequently sang with music great Shelly Rastin, graced such stages as Maggies Jazz Club, Crave, Waldo's, The London Hunt Club, Joe Kools, Jim Bob Rays, and the London Music Club, as well as the Home County Folk Festival’s open mic stage, and she used her gift for charity functions, forming and organizing a small jazz band with local musicians.
In blues soaked, sultry tones, Alexa’s songs vary in their messages, from songs about love, courage and beautiful moments to songs about heartache, loss and moving on. But in all of her music, we hear a wealth of maturity and presence of self in both the songwriting itself and the consistently dynamic vocals Alexa commands. She effortlessly moves from powerhouse vocals to soft, intimate phrasings; and in this way, Alexa Kay bids us welcome to her world of emotion, empathy and expression. If you are lucky enough to witness this Canadian dynamo on stage, you will find a performer clearly born for bright lights and greater things, with a smile as radiant and authentic as her music.
Most recently, Alexa has gone on to win many vocal and singer/songwriter competitions including finalist at Fanshawe's Got Talent, and the Young Inspirations "Shine Your Talent" at Hugh's Room in Toronto where she won the overall audiences choice award. As a recent broadcasting graduate, Alexa now resides in Toronto, hard-working in sales and marketing. As she continues to perform and write music, it is clear Alexa Kay’s star is just beginning to rise and shine; and you are cordially invited to enjoy the glow.
